Description

Ever since the early cowboys cut a swath through the open range and the bawdy cow towns, rodeo has been part of the American scene. Today it has a huge following. Alive with color, movement, and sharp observation, "Man, Beast, Dust" tells the story of rodeo from its beginnings. Clifford P. Westermeier takes us along the dusty trails traveled by cowhands of only yesterday to Cheyenne, Pecos City, Prescott, Lander, and Miles City. We attend two-bit, one-day shows and the fabulous arena contests of the cities. We rodeo with the champions across America as well as with those in Canada, England, South America, and Australia.

Praise For…

“This colorful and detailed study of rodeo—the exhibition in which the cowboy’s work became his sport—traces its beginnings from the early fiestas, stampedes, and roundups of the mid–19th–century American West to its development as a full-fledged entertainment spectacle. The work, originally published in 1947, remains ‘the standard introduction to rodeo history.’”—New York Times Book Review

“From this unembellished miscellany of data the reader gains a picture of rodeo as it really is from the inside out, with the help of facts such as that bucking broncos are born not made.”—North San Antonio Times

“Old photographs and lots of stories make this book just as interesting to today’s rodeo fans as it was to those 40 years ago.”—Western Horseman
