About the Author

Before his retirement from the practice of law in 2012, the natural beauty and solitude of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore provided John Frank with a series of wonderful escapes from the routines of work and everyday life. As he fell in love with the area in the early 1990s, he promised himself a kayak visit to each of the islands in the archipelago. Twenty years later that promise was fulfilled, and it seemed very natural to put some of the things he learned and experienced into a guidebook as a thank you gift to the National Lakeshore that he loves. Some things have changed in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore over the last thirty years, and they will continue to change in the future. While the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore will continue to be protected by governmental ownership, increasingly, in order to thrive, our public lands and parks will need greater support, both moral and financial, from the people who enjoy them. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is lucky to have several nonprofit organizations dedicated to that support, and the author invites those who use this book to consider helping them - particularly the Friends of the Apostle Islands - as a means of preserving these island gems in Lake Superior. The nonprofits may well be the key to maintaining the National Lakeshore as a welcome destination for escaping from everyday routines in generations to come. If you enjoy the beauty, the solitude, and the basic lessons of the natural world, take a water trip and start your own love affair with the Apostle Island National Lakeshore.
